Nighttime

A while ago, when it was still warm and balmy at night, I was trying to relax in my backyard. So, I prepared myself and sat in my comfy chair on the deck, only to be nagged into action by a visitor.

The visitor in question didn’t speak my language but made it clear that I had to do something and not just sit there with a drink in my hand.

The visitor was a single cricket. The last time I had recorded crickets was in 2018 in Manitoba. I was using the Zoom H2 at the time. Yes, I know that that was an ancient recorder, but it served me well. That night, however, not only the crickets made me stop and listen, but also a car flashing red and blue, a while later.

It turned out that my then new car could go much faster than the road regulations allowed, even after midnight. So, 430 bucks later, I went home and checked my recording. It didn’t turn out as good as I wanted it.

This time, however, the cricket was somewhere close, there was no wind at all, so I recorded it with my Behringer C-2s, without even any wind protection.

Here is what I ended up with:

This one didn’t disappoint and was still in my yard many nights later.

Until next time…
