Afternoon storm

Sometimes, just sometimes, everything comes together like clockwork. Today was not such a day. A thunderstorm “showed up” by surprise, none was forecast in my area. So when it did start, it started with a loud bang, unlike any other t-storms.

Thunderstorm

This one  started as if someone had flipped a switch.

So I scrambled to get my recording gear together. My Zoom F3, already on a stand, together with the mics refused to work for more than 3 seconds and shut down just after I started it up. Batteries dead.

So I had to find the other batteries. Also dead. So I cannibalised the Flashes that I have for my camera. Good to go. Inserted the batteries, only to see the stand sink slowly (and noisily) below the window sill.

I had to extend a different section of the stand, as the cables I was using were heavier than before. In the mean time, the storm continued to rage overhead.

When I finally had everything together and recording, the heaviest part of the storm was already over.

This is the part that I was left with for recording:

All of this frantic preparation seemed long, but in reality, it was less than 60 seconds. The storm was a loud one, but short-lived. At least with the 32-bit float recording of the F3, I was able to record everything in one take and no need for adjusting levels after the fact.

The picture in this post was taken on a different date, just sayin’

Until next time…
