Back when I was a kid, those vinyl records with sound effects were all the rage. Even more, if you wanted to make your own slideshow afternoon for the whole neighbourhood. The only way to not have everyone fall asleep after 5 minutes of vacation slides was to include some serious sound.

Sound recording devices were in very short supply back then, so the next best thing was to get the records with sound effects.

One of the most sought-after effects was that of a passing train. The horn or whistle was guaranteed to wake up your audience. Here, in Nova Scotia I don’t have access to train tracks, so recording trains is out. The next best thing is “regular” traffic on a provincial road.

So this is what I came up with. The lead picture of this post is not the same road.

This one is perhaps less effective than a steam train or a fast-moving freight train, but I use what I can get. And it would be very surprising to get a train rolling by while I was standing on the beach…

Until next time…
