Nova Scotia is dry, dry to a crisp. Staying out of the woods and wooded paths is not just mandatory, but also good common sense. Luckily, we also have beaches where we can relax.
I have been posting about beach sounds for a while now,
trying to figure out the best way to go about it. Using Omni mics doesn’t give me the right stereo image. On a beach, there are also no trees to act as a baffle between them. They are good to be used in the forbidden woods.
Using cardioids left me with a ton of wind noise, despite the excellent protection of the Bubblebee Windkillers. Until I found out that the noise was coming from the other end of the mics. So I bought these things: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B093X2TCSH. It turns out that they can remain on a connector, all rolled up and be rolled out once the connector is, ehm, connected. No more wind noise! Just make sure to cut off the closed end.
As a stand, I started using my photo tripod, a Manfrotto carbon fibre that I use mostly for my camera. The mic stand I used before does not hold up well after purchase. Ok, it was nice while it lasted, at least it didn’t cost me a fortune.
So here is a nice relaxing sound from the beach pictured above. Apart from removing the parts where people are asking me if I am photographing birds (?!?!!) I made no other adjustments. A little EQ to make it sound a little more balanced, that’s all.
Until next time...
