Relaxing on the beach

Well, relaxing for as much as possible on a beach in Canada in winter. While the swimming attire had to wait at home, the weather was nice enough to present some waves on a beach with rocks. Every field recordist has something like that in his/her collection, right?

Rode M5

For me, this was an opportunity to try out something new.

This is the first time I got out with a new set of microphones. Up until now, I have been using the Behringer C-2s as I like the directionality of the cardioids. However, they are a little “crispy” to say the least. That’s probably a good thing if you add windshields to them, but on the whole, they are a little thin in sound.

Then I found the Rode M5 matched stereo pair. They are double the price of the Behringers, but these come with a staggering 10-year warranty. So it was for me a good time to try them out.

Since everything is pretty quiet up here in Canada during the winter, I went to the only source of sound I could imagine: the beach.

It was some –5C out there, not enough to freeze the Atlantic Ocean. Cold enough to have nobody foolish enough to be on the beach.

Here is the result of this little time off:

Compared to the Behringers, these are a little more muted, but at the same time, more true to what I was hearing at the time. Anyway, there is nothing that a little EQ in post can’t fix for these. I am really looking forward to the more lively seasons so that I can record… well… more…

Until next time…
